Ashtanga Yoga is a traditional Yoga method that follows a set sequence. In our half Guided Primary class Plus you are taken through most of the Primary series postures, starting with Sun salutations & standing postures, which can help with Strength & balance. Then to seated postures, promoting concentration, flexibility & meditative qualities. The ‘plus’ might be pranayama (breathing techniques), yoga philosophy discussion, posture investigation- looking deeper at the purpose of a particular posture.
It is open to any level. Hydrate before and after your class but not during. Expect to get very hot.  Please contact us if you require more information.

4 week Yoga course, In this class you will learn Yoga asanas (postures) that can help with concentration, build strength and flexibility. You will also learn some breath work (pranayama), that can help with focus, relaxation, sleeping and stilling the mind. By the end of the four weeks you will have your own yoga toolbox to use and practice wherever you are.

The Mysore class is for those practicing Primary or Intermediate Ashtanga Yoga (third series between April-November). If you are new to Ashtanga Yoga you can expect to practice for around 30 minutes in your first class, learning the sun salutations & some standing postures. In your second week you will repeat these & add more, building a practice that is individualised for your needs.
You will not be led, it is like having a 1-2-1 lesson in a class setting.

A Weekend of Practice &Workshops with Andrea Lutz (Berlin)

Our purpose built Shala is 10 minute walk from the Beach, part of the beautiful Jurassic Coast line.

About Andrea:
Andrea started her Yoga practice in 1986 first in the tradition of Shivananda and Iyengar until she met in 1997 her first Ashtanga Yoga teacher. Immediately she was fascinated by this challenging tradition and is practicing daily since then.
Her Ashtanga Yoga practice is mainly influenced by the „old style” teachings of Sri K. Patthabi Jois, carried by her teachers Nancy Gilgoff and Manju P. Jois. With both she is closely connected since more than 15 years. She travels the world to teach and study and since 2006 she traveled every year to Maui to practice under the guidance of Nancy Gilgoff. She finished the ‘old’ third series with Nancy.
In 2009 Manju certified Andrea to teach Ashtanga Yoga, Pranayama and Chanting.
Additionally she completed 4 extended trips to Mysore/ India to study Ashtanga Yoga with Vijay Kumar and Pranayama with his brother Vinay Kumar.
Her whole adult life she is researching different ways of moving and healing the body and mind. Besides her studies in different Yoga traditions, Andrea has a profound background in Physiotherapy and Alternative Healing (“Heilpraktiker“) and she is a II Degree Reiki practioner. For more than 10 years she was fulltime active in performance art and dance.
Her love and deep interest focuses on the transformational aspects of the practice and the possibility to develop a higher level of awareness. Consciousness and compassion are main aspects of her teaching.
Andrea founded her own school, the Ashtanga Studio Berlin, in 2005, where she is still teaching daily Mysore classes.

fullsizeoutput_21aaNancy Gilgoff Practitioners Clinic

This summer we are thrilled to be welcoming Nancy Gilgoff to AYE.
The Practitioners Clinic is about you and your practice.
You will enjoy a (not too early) morning practice session plus afternoon sessions, during which we will examine the postures of the Primary Series. We will focus on ways to avoid injury while practicing, as well as on how to connect to the bandhas when moving in and out of the postures.
You will get lots of personal adjustments from Nancy as it is a small class of 20 maximum.
(Clinic open to anyone with an understanding of the Ashtanga Primary Series).
Nancy began practicing Ashtanga Yoga over forty years ago with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, in Mysore, India. As a result of their long and close association, Nancy is able to teach with a style and touch that comes directly from Pattabhi Jois. When Nancy asked Jois how she should teach, he told her to “teach the way I taught you”—advice which she took to heart and continues to follow today.
Nancy’s studies over the years have also led her to other teachers, including Baba Hari Das and, for asana, instructors of Iyengar. In addition, she has and continues to pursue the dharma teachings of the Dalai Lama.
Nancy spends much of her time touring the United States, Europe, and Asia, teaching with a view to fostering loving-kindness and to sharing her love and experience of yoga. Click here for more

A.Y.E have your back

We look forward to welcoming you into our friendly & growing community at our purpose built Shala, AYE.

Six day Mysore Intensive

Sunday -Friday. Next course; DTBC…..7am,

A week of early morning self practice with Neil  & Jinty
Our Shala doors will open between 6 – 8am. (7-9am on Sunday)
Arrive anytime after 6am (as long as your practice is finished by 8am)
We will be here to teach, share, watch, guide, adjust & prompt you.
The benefits of practicing daily, in a group, with a teacher are many. You will learn a lot about yourself & your practice, you will gain strength & flexibility.
In a led class our instruction is generalised, whereas a Mysore class is specific to you, your practice and your body.
We can look at modifications for any injury or past traumas, or how to move further in to a posture that you may feel is holding you back, using breath & bandhas & a wealth of experience.

Imagine doing this every day for 6 days. If you have never had the opportunity of a daily Mysore programme now is your chance to find out what it is all about – (without having to take time off work for a retreat).
To get the full benefit we would prefer you to do the full course but understand this may be impossible for some so you may do as many days as you can.

Sunday 7-9am
Monday  6-8am.

Past work shops;

‘My arms are too short’….& other stories.  Saturday 7th July, 8.30-11am,

Arm Balances, binding, lifting up & lotus.
We will be taking a closer look to see if and how our own anatomy affects our ability in some of the more challenging Yoga asanas.
It will be a fun few hours with with a chance to try some postures from intermediate and third series (optional).
Open to everyone, any level.
Lots of practice and a little theory.
Time for questions and obviously our AYE coffee or chai.
with Neil and Jinty in a small group,

Deepen your Practice Workshop,   Saturday 24th March, 8.30am-11am, ***more Saturday workshops coming soon………

Would you like to move forward in your practice?
Deepen your knowledge of Ashtanga Yoga?
Understand a little of Yoga philosophy?
In a modern world where Yoga, (particularly in the media), has become focused purely on the Asana (posture) we will be looking at moving beyond what a posture should ‘look’ like & explore Ashtanga Yoga’s other limbs.
In this workshop you will learn on how the Angas (eight limbs) can influence your experience of your practice.
Connecting these philosophies with a physical practice focusing on Postures that you may struggle with or maybe that you do not understand.
Questions welcome.

There will be time for coffee/chai and discussion

*All profits from this workshop will be given to ‘The Yoga Industry’s’ Kickstarter campaign. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1978439659092529&ref=br_rs
Their aim is to make a documentary which will discuss the real values of Yoga.
“Yoga has been redefined by marketing companies, social media platforms and the fitness industry without any understanding for what gives yoga its definition.”
The documentary will focus on a Yoga that exists in the small yoga Shala’s and the many dedicated teachers with years of practice experience.

  1. Hello
I’ve did a two week yoga retreat in baki this year and discovered a preference for ashtanga yoga. So im not a beginner but also haven’t been practising lately. What class would you recommend i start with as i rather challenge myself than do something to basic initially.
    Thanks
